The explosion almost split the plane in two.

Sitting on an ammunition box, looking out his window on the left side of the plane, Buschmeier heard a loud, sudden whomping noise. An anti-aircraft shell had exploded in front of the plane, lifting its front section. Shrapnel hit the aircraft. Then another shell exploded near the tail. Again, shrapnel hit Miss Irish. Buschmeier feared the next shell would hit the aircraft dead center.

His terror was justified. The third burst struck the right side of the aircraft’s radio room, blowing out a twelve-by-six-foot section of the fuselage. The explosion almost split the plane in two. The blast destroyed a wall between the radio room and the tail of the plane. A door landed between Buschmeier’s legs. Where metal plates had formed the floor and right wall in the radio room, he saw the English Channel.

The hole in the fuselage of Miss Irish was massive.
